Breast Cancer Update:
So, here’s what’s been going on for the last week and a half:
Last Monday, my friends Laura and January Seraph accompanied me to the hospital for my mastectomy. I was pretty nervous, as I’m sure you all could imagine. Before my surgery, the nurse put me in a space with a bed partitioned off by curtains. I was sandwiched between two other patients. As I laid in my bed, I could overhear the neighboring patients conversations with the nurses (curtain walls are rather thin). I soon learned that the man on my right had an infected testicle that had to be removed and on my left, a man had to have his jaw wired shut due to being jumped. Gotta love SF General.
Eventually, I was wheeled in to the operating room, put on the slab, and was out for what was supposed to be a 2 hour operation. 4 hours later, I was wheeled into the recovery room and shouting at nurses. My operation was a success! Where my left titty once was, was now replaced with a large white bandage with two tubes hanging out to drain whatever body fluid that my body was trying to put in my newly vacated titty space. Here’s a pic!
Once checked out of the hospital, Laura whisked me away to a lovely hotel in San Francisco’s Union Square, where I was to spend the next 9 days recovering and watching a ridiculous amount of cable television.
Yesterday, I was finally released back into the world and back at the hospital for my post surgery follow up. Everything appeared to look alright to the doctors. My drainage tubes were removed and I was told that I now have a 6 week break to rest my body before radiation. This is the first time I’ve had a break from anything hospital related. I’m SO excited by this! =D
Once my body is healed, I go back in for radiation, then reconstruction. The surgeons said that I should be fully recovered by December.
